I am so sad to learn that Teresa Marsico died in 2005. That was the same year I retired from UMDNJ. Teresa was a Nurse Midwive at the university. She founded the Nurse Midwivery program there. Before I met Teresa I thought that nurse-midwivery was something practiced in "the olden days."
My goodness, she was such a lovely and caring person. I will remember her with great fondness and respect.
It is hard to dismiss the "There are no coincidents"(sp??) theory when something like this happens. I just joined the NJBiz feed this morning. The Marscio notice is was jus published today. If this had not happened I never would have known about Teresa.
Here is the short article in full.
Founder Leaves Funds to Midwifery Program
The founder of the nurse midwifery program at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) has left a $250,000 scholarship fund for midwifery students. Teresa Marsico, a past president of the American College of Nurse-Midwives, was dedicated to caring for women and babies, especially those who were medically underserved and financially disadvantaged, university executives said. The Manasquan resident bequeathed funds to the Foundation of UMDNJ. The resulting Teresa Marsico Endowed Scholarship fund will distribute annual scholarships to nurse midwifery students at UMDNJ. In 1975, Marsico founded the program at the UMDNJ-School of Health Related Professions, where she was named professor emeritus. It has transitioned from a one-year certificate program to a Master of Science and Nursing program that will educate students in both midwifery and women's health. - Scott Goldstein
