Small of Me?

-- Click for more Information to popup    Just one more entry and to get this off of my chest. Bah Humbug!!

I get so tired of people trying to join the Romance Noire Book Club (a online Yahoo book club for AA and multicultural romance novels) without the right credentials. Being a publisher who serves multicultural authors is not the same as "AA and Multi...". Oh whine, hiss. Then they get angry with me when I don't allow their messages to be posted. I started this group in 2000 because there was no place for authors of this genre of romance novel to meet and talk.  Sadly, I have stopped thinking that folks will read the criteria for joining RNBC. However, I cannot have *my* authors bombarded or harassed in their safe haven!!!  We have 200 romance authors, writers, wannabes inthe group and I am determined to keep their community safe and secure. No SPAM, no outsiders, no odd postings! Thanks for listening Mr. Bloggie  (whine).

Ohh. I see that I used a lot of underlinesand exclamation marks. To me, that has always signified a slightly wacko person. How wacko depends on the amount of  ***, underlining and exclamation points!!!!   Big smile-Okey, I am feeling much better now.

p.s. I could not find a picture of an angry woman--apparently we women keep cool at all times.

Happy New Year!!

Champagne background -- Click for more Information to popup     I had an odd dream last night or very early this morning. It was one of those dreams that are hard to come out of. Very strange. Fortunately, I learned not to fall asleep while watching like shows like The Twilight Zone. I can't begin to tell you the horrors that came from them. TTZ came on after the Honeymooners. Oh boy!!. :-(  These days, apparently watching the news has the same affect.

When I went downstairs to get my mail, I found some of those small (really small) dividend checks. I used to ignore them, then later I would find them everywhere. But no longer--if my old friend who was treated a king with a capital "K", at my old brokerage firm, could walk up to my desk and hand me 21 cent checks to put into his seriously big bucks account, I can hold my head up and do the same at my bank. For some reason he always called me "Fran", actually he called me "Fran darling" (big smile)

Since I will be out of town New Year's Eve I guess this will be my last journal item for this year. In 2006 I am going to concentrate on positive 'everything'.

Happy New Year. Wishing everyone peace, blessing, good health and fortune.

And like singer Al Green, I wish you Love and Happiness.rainbows with stars -- Click for more Information to popup

End of the Year Thoughts

woman typing a letter -- Click for more Information to popup    Oh where, oh where,  is the Mary Tyler Moore show?  I think that was the name of it. Right now my television is on and, as always, I have been pretty much ignoring it--just using it as 'white sound', because I work better that way. I am not sure what station it is, but someone is talking about eating deer testicles--definitely time for a channel change! See. This is why you gotta watch Big Red Dog or Arthur cartoons; or cooking shows. You don't have to pay attention and they don't gross you out.

My retirement anniversary? Wow! I can't believe that it is almost one year since retirement. I still miss everyone and they are often in my thoughts. I am saddened by what's taking place at UMD. On the other hand I must confess that I am happy to be away from the fuss and bother of it all. I just found an old resume, just reading it made me tired. It makes me I appreciate my retirement even more. I am still putting in a lot of hours but I focusing on something else these days. I feel blessed to be able to concentrate on doing what I love. It has brought more days and longer hours than I expected, ideally I expected to work 2 or 3 days a week, just a few hours a day. I am not sure what happened, but things exploded. Oh look--he has (the chef, don't know his name or name of show) made polenta (sort of like grits) and topping it with sausage and artichokes in red gravy. Yum.  Mmmm. Wavering attention span. I have to smile because some friends continue to think that I am on a long vacation, if that were true I am sure that I would be bored out of my mind :-(   I think what I have is the best of both worlds.

Stay home and be safe? Last night there was a news report about a woman who was struck in the face (maybe the eye) and killed by a stray bullet that entered a window in her 5 floor apartment. Just a few weeks ago, a couple was killed while sleeping in their bed; a car crashed into their house.

Year 2006? How can that be? I still remember George Orwell's futuristic novel, 1984, where we live in a society that is led by Big Brother who watches everything we do and listens to everything we say. I remember wondering could that  really happen? MMmmm. Too bad I can't remember how the story ends.

EeK--I'm late!!  It's after 11:00 a.m. and I am still here wondering if I have biz mail. I am sure that I won't know if I don't check :-) At this moment (it's quiet, it's raining), I am feeling mighty like Scarlett O'hara and feel like thinking 'bout it tomorrow.

Happy Holidays

Christmas card -- Click for more Information to popup      2005  has been a challenging year for so many. I wish all of my friends the best in this coming year. I continue to pray for those with personal and family problems concerning health and home.

Wow. It's been a long time since I have posted in my journal. Not much has happened since my last visit here. I was away from December 3 to the 17. That's the longest time I have ever been away from home. I don't call it a vacation because I took my laptop and had incoming telephone calls transferred to my cell phone. It is real decent typing and watching waves. While away, one thing became abundantly clear--I would love to live near the ocean. It is amazing to wake up to a view of water as far as you can see. One night the rain came hard and heavy, of course I was delighted because I love rain. Earlier the weather station had reported that we would get "gale like rain". Very exciting. However, the wind was outrageous. It was far worse than UMDNJ's dreaded wind tunnel corner :-(  During those stay-in times, I thought of sitting in the near empty lobby and reading, but as I told my girl friend, a picture of Agatha Christie's Ms. Marple kept popping into my head. How grim is that?

Last  I watched early Andy Williams Christmas shows from the 1960's. PBS had a special and it was wonderful. It brought back good memories of my own family Christmases when I was younger.  Noisey, loving and warm. It's interesting that Andy Williams talked about memories; and we saw his children, singing brothers, parents, the very young Osmond brothers and more.  However, he never mentioned  his ex-wife Claudine Longet even though she was in many of the shots with Andy and their children. Longet(sp?) was involved in a murder scandal in the late 70's. I think she was convicted of manslaugher of her lover, skier, Spider Sabich.  prove that

Psychology Tests and Other Fun Quizzes ;-)

school project, mathematics -- Click for more Information to popup    Late last night I was doing a search on psychology testing and ended up at the "Psychology Magazine" site. Guesss what; they had online tests there :-) I ended up taking a couple and didn't hate the results. Although when I completed the standard I.Q. test, along with the number results was a statement that "your score was slightly above average; however you received 50% on the  ????? test. I was really curious about that 50% score.  I suspect it was off those "apple is to orange as cigarette is to..." the thing is, if you want a deeper explanation, you must pay to see it. What a bummer! Here is the URL for the tests--there are many.  http://www.psychologytoday.com/pto/self_tests.php   These days, even when I work I get to play a bit.   Yep--I did find my information.

Enjoy

My November Movies

film -- Click for more Information to popup     A friend asked me to post my movie review URL here because she says it is easier to find here. O.K.  here it is. http://www.gardenandhearth.com/Movie-Reviews.htm I have The Bishops Wife here cuz, I just love this old black and white movie. I also did The Constant Gardener; and no I do not think Tessa was having an affair. I'm not naive, it just doesn't fit.

Everyone is welcome to suggest a movie. I already have one suggestion for the latest Harry Potter movie. I will try to see it this month.

p.s.  the site above is slow :-( but please don't be discouraged. Anyway please let me know if you agree (or not)  with my take on these movies. Would love to know what you think.

Daily Read

-- Click for more Information to popup     While away I picked up The Press Newspaper. This A. C. paper had a lot of stuff about Philly but I did find a few things of interest on November 25:

Beetle Baily. Just two windows--one character says, "Well, it's official...Human beings are now smart enough to destroy all life on earth." Friend says, "Yeah" "And just dumb enough to do it." Mmmm. Maybe just a little truth there :-(

TV showing of  "Holly Jolly Christmas" with Burl Ives.  A friend and I were recently talking about Burl Ives as Big Daddy in Cat On A Hot Tin Roof. We agreed that Ives was the quintessential "Big Daddy."  No one else comes close his performance. But you know how I think of Burl Ives?  I remember him singing "Big Rock Candy Mountain"--I had a little record player and several  '45' records (really bright yellow). Even as I type this, I can hear his voice in my head . Of course, the only words I remember from this song is, Big Rock Candy Mountain, but that's enough to make me smile :-)

Cartoon on editorial page: Big sign MERRY XMAS behind store counter, Christmas decorations are in place. Customer says, "It seems your Christmas decorations go up earlier every year."  Store clerk (sales associate??) says "These are for 2006."  Far-fetched? A little, but I did see a huge Xmas bubble the first week in November at my local CVS.

Great Commentary: Cashless society already here, at least for the young by Marsha Mercer, Washington bureau chief of Media General News Service wrote, "... I'm a baby boomer who will fish through many coins on the bottom of my purse to find three pennies for exact change--  although not usually when people are behind me in line.  Once I read a suggestion to toss spare pennies on the sidewalk to delight children who'll find them. I tried it but I felt silly,..."  She also states, "...But Generation X and Y are shaping retail, banking and the newspaper business. Companies that print checks have suffered such a decline in demand for checks that they're shutting down manufacturing plants...."  If interested--the full text of article is here http://www.pressofatlanticcity.com/opinion/commentary/story/5722403p-5739742c.html  She says she may get a debit card. Maybe I will too. I saw a couple buying lunch while at Ikea, they both used their own debit cards--and charged? debited less than $5. The cashier did not seem to be surprised.

And finally, I read an article about our troops in Iraq eating their Thanksgiving dinner between patrols. There was a picture of several soldiers and they were smiling. Just reading the article and looking at the photo made me step out on the balcony and say a quick prayer for our people to get out of Iraq quickly and safely.

AOL Testing--Testing

person working on computer     I see that I have received a follow-up service survey e-mail from AOL, so figured before responding to them, I should  test my laptop by making a journal entry this morning. You know, those of us who use our computers daily are really held hostage by these Internet marvels. Those few days I had to use the library computers really made me appreciate the luxury of having my own to use any time of day or night. I have been getting telephone calls from a media rating company, I do not pick up the phone because they have never left a message. I was not sure if the company is real or bogus, but was able to check it out online late last night. They are real--I still will not pick up the telephone, but at least I know that they are who they say they are ;-)

O.K. I have answered the AOL survey.  AOL dial-up is slow but their tech service people are  excellent. It's like talking to my favorite IST man at UMDNJ.

Belated Happy Thanksgiving Wishes and Blessings

thanksgiving turkey  The person in this pix is not supposed to be me. I have never roasted a turkey.

I had made plans to go to Atlantic City for Thanksgiving so I could catch up with and spend some time with a friend. You can't believe how many people were at the hotel. Wow! We ate dinner in the Sands Buffet room because my friend wanted turkey and neither one of us had thought of making reservations in advance one of the nearby restaurants. I would love to know how much turkey and dressing the Sands served that day. I opted for pot roast--no dressing, I have not had dressing since my mom died. Nothing looks or smells like moms corn bread stuffing. I once ate so much of it that I was sick. I did learn to restrain myself in later years. Thanksgiving in AC is a lovely way to spend the day for those who don't want to do the big dinner thing. This time I did put $15 in the slots. $10 went in the .25 machine and I came out $1.00 ahead. A little later I went to the .5 machine. Did you know that there are penny slots too? How can they make money with a penny slot? By making you put at least a $5 bill in the machine, this gives you 500 chances to win--no kidding. I put a couple of nickels in the .5 slot and won/hit (not sure of term) 310 nickels :-)  That's just $15 but it does buy 2 Grey Goose martinis ;-) I just shoveled them in my purse and kept moving. That's where they are now--so using a different purse.

I do plan to get back to AC soon for my personal spa week. I will use the gym early in the am, walk everyday, eat light and wake up with the sun in my face. In Martha's words "It's a good thing".

Well, since this is my 'work in the house day', I had better get busy online and do some real work. I promised to finish a book review by the end of the month. Fortunately it's a mystery novel. I love them.

Great Joy--My PC is Behaving Again!

Cartoon faces -- Click for more Information to popup  Why the big smile! I was so lost while working with a laptop that was not running on full. I could type but not always save. I absolutely could not save to this journal--some of my friends wanted to know what happened. It was just a matter of not having time to stop. Instead I used the library's computers. Some of them are at least 10 years old, so I was not able to do everything I needed to. I would prepare copy in beautiful cursive and the printer would give me standard block print (whine)

Finally the day before Thanksgiving (hope yours was happy) I went online with the AOL help desk--don't you know when they signed me in to chat, I could not send a response to them! I finally sent and e-mail to their comment site and they responsed the next day. BUT--I was heading out of the house. Yesterday I called as they suggested and wah-lah! my laptop is good to go. The problem was at AOL's end.  Anyway it is so good to be back and I am smiling big.

A Few Weeks Ago -- Not Ill, Just Under the Weather

sad face in flower power motif -- Click for more Information to popup   I was not ill, I seldom am, but I had been a bit out of it. That did not stop me from doing what I had to do or had planned. It was  my theater day so I went to NY to see Absurb Person Singular as planned. The play was at the Biltmore theater. I had forgotten how much I love sitting in the lounge area before curtain. I usually read or talk to strangers while I have a glass of wine. I had just taken cold medication, so could not have a drink :-(  I was a little embarrassed because I kept making those cat-type tiny sneezes. The woman sitting next to me remarked that I appeared to be "under the weather."  I wondered where the phrase "under the weather" came from, so of course, when I arrived home went to the Internet. I found several sites and explanations, I like this explanation best, cuz it has some color ;-)

Under the Weather:
This popular phrase for "ill" dates back to 1827. It is commonly believed that bad weather can make you sick.

A site visitor gave her opinion:
I believe that "under the weather" is an old sailor phrase. When men were sick, they would rest below deck and thus were literally "under" the weather on deck.

Anyway, I am a bit under the weather but I did pick up my mail, lunch with a friend and came home to nap. It feels so great to have the "nap" option. It is one of the golden  retirement perks :-)

Mid Week Musings

typewriter -- Click for more Information to popup    Sooo happy the elections are over! The television campaign ads get more personal and uglier. Very tacky.  You know of course, what one candidate says about the other is never really forgotten.  I don't think that it forgiven either.  Not  sure what Corzine did to his wife but she had the best payback ever! So how many "vote for my candidate" telephone calls did you all receive?. Grrrr!

Searching for vending items, I may rent space at a holiday bazaar. Have to make up my mind soon. One of the items I saw and am intrigued by is a man's gift set of a watch, pen and flask. I would love to have the flask myself--it's so Gatsby. Not sure that I would have enough nerve to fill it, I am even less sure that I would have nerve to use it after it filled. I know for sure that I would not drink from the flask (LOL)

We have had some wonderfully warm weather this November. It has been so warm that I have been going out wearing sweaters only. I have seen other people wearing less, some are still wearing sandals. Really hopeful that there will be a chill in the air by Thanksgiving.  For me that is part of the holiday magic. I am looking outside at the neighborhood trees as I type; each tree has slightly different bold colored leaves. Mother Nature continues to be awesome, doesn't she? I don't see a tree that qualifies in color as the "rain tree". Anyone who saw the old Liz Taylor movie, Raintree County, will know what I mean.  Speaking of Thanksgiving, I just realized that I have not seen any decorations for that holiday, I guess they are only in supermarkets. However, Christmas decorations everywhere you look.

I am working from home today. Don't believe the 'work in your flannel pajamas and fuzzy bunny slippers' hype. If you are like me you won't be able to do that. Fortunately I bought several long sweat shirt type garments that you see women wearing while on vacation. My shirts have Atlantic City and big dice or large decks of cards across the chest. Not something I would wear outside, but they are comfortable and I feel like I am dressed, albeit, not my usual style but it works for me.

Yesterday I went to NJ Transit to check out a discount travel card for, dare I sayit?seniors.  A friend told me about this. So anyway, I go to the counter and say I'd like to get a senior discount card and one sweet young woman says, "Is it for your mother?".  I was so delighted that had it not appeared very weird and gotten me in a lot of trouble, I would have went behind the counter and hugged her.  Thank goodness for small things that make your day.

Life's Changes

-- Click for more Information to popup    I just received some sad news from a dear friend. She told me that her mom has died. She didn't say much just that--I knew it was bad news when I heard her terse message. "Van, I need you to call me right away." I had just missed the called by minutes. I am happy that I did, it gave me time to be able to accept whatever news it was with dignity instead of the dread and anxiety I was feeling, to help her keep her own dignity. I have found the each friend has her or his own self-measure line. It's so hard when your mom dies. You think you are all grown up, but that's the moment of truth.

There has been so much talk about Prince Charles and his wife. I think it is about time someone in the Queen's family has found happiness. I wish them the best. I may be  in the minority, but when I hear talk of Diana, I can only think that surely she knew that he did not love her, or more to the point, did she love him?  So many lives damaged. Money, status and propriety still rules, but at what cost??   I guess this shows that happiness can come at any time and any age when you stand up and speak out.

I saw the movie North Country yesterday. I am supposed to write a review. It is going to be difficult for me to do--what a dark, gray movie. A single mother (aren't they always??) trying to make a living for her two boys and herself finds work in a coal mine. Ugly things happen to her and the few other woman who work in the mines. The opinion is that these women  have "taken jobs from men". The movie shows sexual harassment you won't believe; you know this is a script, but it call still make you sick to watch. Anita Hill is mentioned a couple of times. In one scene, Hill is seen on television, the woman turns up the sound and her mother says "Turn that filth off--oh that poor man and his family."  Earlier when the woman to returns to her parents home with her children and her face beaten, her father asks if husband beat her because he found her with another man. Not much nurturing going on here. It is a good movie, well worth seeing.  Sometimes all it takes is one voice tobe heard above the rest.   Then and Now: Anita Hill  http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/01/03/cnn25.tan.anita.hill/

Some things don't change. It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown is shown every Halloween. It is hard to believe that it was firstshown in 1966. 39 years ago? WOW!! Vince Guaraldi's music still sounds good. Another thing that has not changed is musician Carlos Santana's talent. I heard his guitar on morning television and came running in just to see a few seconds of this fabulous man.  Yep. He still blows me away ;-)

Goodbye Rosa Parks 1913-2005

A Civil Rights Icon     There have been countless stories about Rosa Parks and her famous (or infamous) riding the bus story. I have read that there were other's who at some point did the same thing (refuse to give up a seat on the bus) that Parks did. I have always thought that history-making events happen exactly when they are supposed to. I think those who earlier refused to follow an age-old segregation law are to be commended. However, when Parks refused to move, it was the right time, she was the chosen one, the catalyst. If this had happened earlier, perhaps Martin Luther King would not have been ready to do what he had to do; perhaps the townspeople would have not been ready to walk, beg rides, do whatever it took to get to work, to church,  to visit the sick, etc., for over one year. It's ironic that a woman who was arrested because she would not move to the rear of a bus, was given the highest honor by the White House. Rosa Parks coffin was in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda for viewing.

Yep! I think history-making events happen exactly when they are supposed to.  We thank you  Ms. Parks.

The Color Purple and Donald Byrd

artist with brush and palette     I know that a lot of people are aware that The Color Purple is coming to the Broadway stage. Information is here www.colorpurple.com  I just received  information that Donald Byrd (for me his is a name from "the days in NYC". Very good times :-)), has written "The Sleeping Beauty Notebook", it will be performed and danced at the Dance Theater Workshop in New York  until November 12. The DTW is located at 219 W. 19th Street. The tickets are cheapies $15 to $25. Call 212-924-0077 .

Mmmm very odd--I had a hard time finding the DWT site, was able to locate actual url on a site titled Jim's Deli??? Anyway here is the DWT url http://www.dtw.org/ and Jim's Deli also. I won't guess how the title came about but there is some good info there, no food though. http://www.jimsdeli.com/

The Newark Museum, A City Treasure

treasure chest with gold coins in it -- Click for more Information to popup     Last week I attended a lecture on Jackson Pollock, the artist, at the Newark Museum. The speaker was excellent and so enthusiastic about Pollock. While there, I also looked at the wonderful Power Dressing Men's Fashing and Prestige of Africa exhibit--it is very powerful. I also browsed in the gift shop. I was really tempted to buy an African print jacket I saw, but then wondered where and when I would wear this lovely piece of art? Thank goodness common sense pervailed.

It is well worth it to take some time to get to the Newark Museum to see the awesome Power Dressing exhibit and everything else there. So many Newarker's just don't know what we have here. Our museum is world famous. It's site is impressive, but the museum is more so. www.newarkmuseum.org  There is a lot of good stuff going on there :-)  Bus groups travel from New York come to see our collections. Years ago, the museum loaned pieces from its permanent collection of Tibetan art for an exhibit in New York. A friend and I went--we could not believe that there were about 500 hundred people viewing the (our) works the day we were there.

There are other great places in New Jersey, field trips are not just children you know :-) http://www.fieldtrip.com/nj/index_nj.htm  If you feel that you must have a child with you, take one, both of you will have a good time.    Cartoon boy with toys -- Click for more Information to popup

And, don't forget the Governor of New Jersey is looking for a new slogan, if you think you have one send itin. http://www.state.nj.us/slogan/  I do love the one we have now, but everything changes, doesn't it?

Reminder to Turn Clocks Back One Hour!

-- Click for more Information to popup     My friend sent me an e-mail and included in a reminder that daylight saving time ends at midnight.  Passing her reminder on to you all.  Isn't it nice to be taken care of in those small ways  that mean so much?    :-)

"Don't forget to set your clocks back tonight at 12 midnite.  (...spring forward, fall back) "    S'

Remember what happened to Cinderella when she forgot to do what she was advised to do? Of course nothing that drastic will happen to you if you do forget to turn your clocks back at midnight, but you will be an hour early for any appointment you have on Sunday. You may even show up at WORK an hour early. Ooohh!

Need Some Get Away Time? Try a Virtual Vacation

Luggage  In the year 2059 world of J. D. Robb, author Nora Roberts' alter ego, there are such things as virtual travel where you can actually feel the wind in your face and the sand between your toes. NYC top cop Eve Dallas and her not quite respectable husband Roarke (one name only--that makes Eve Mrs. Roarke--but I digress) often take these virtual journeys for a little quick R&R after particularly busy days. The travel section of today's NY Times has a story by Mark Wallace that could be an extension of the Robb science fiction novels. Wallace reports "More than 10 million people around the world travel to such imaginary destinations regularly. They get there via software that lets them guide their onscreen representatives, known as "avatars," through places built entirely of pixels where they can interact with one another. Their destinations include virtual dance parties and nightclubs, auto races and yachting events, "Star Wars"-style cantinas, whimsical underwater jazz clubs and much more.  In a world called Second Life, especially (where the virtual Hawaii described above can be found), so many people visit that profitable businesses have sprung up that earn their proprietors real money, not just virtual currency - in fact, a handful of people earn six-figure incomes there. There are discos, casinos and other sites that can be rented for private parties or even for the virtual weddings many people hold."

My goodness, is that wild or what?? It seems that one woman in South Dakota married a man she met on "Second Life".  MMmmm, I wonder how the divorce rate is in that glorious virtual land? Although I am not a video game player I find that I am very curious about "Second Life" so I went to the site for information http://secondlife.com/whatis/. It is very odd and seems like a lot of hard work.  Traveling with Eve Dallas and Rourke may be the best way to take a vacation from it all. Be sure to start with the first novel in the J.D. Robb "In Death" series Naked in Death,  Amazon.com  has it.

Where Are You Alan Greenspan?

-- Click for more Information to popup   I have been watching a particular stock for a while now and checking out its forum now and then.  I never post, I just lurk hoping to learn somethng. This morning I saw this post, "It is amazing how it can go from almost nothing to something so big, from being a drag to being an object of desire."..."Yay, look at the stock soar!! Oh wait. Nevermind."

LOL, I just love humorous posters.

By the way, the Feds have found someone to replace  Greenspan as the new chair of the Fed Reserve Board of Governors. His successor is Dr. Ben S. Bernanke. I wonder if he will remain as long as Alan Greenspan did 1987 to 2005. WOW! If the new man is approved by congress he comes on board Feb 1, 2006.  I will miss Greenspan's graveled voice :-(

Revisiting the Past

restaurant jukebox -- Click for more Information to popup   Last week I looked in my mail box and found one of those advertisements they send to "Resident". It was an ad for laundromat(sp??) services. I usually just toss that kind of thing in the trash but for some reason it held my attention. I finally realized that it was the same company my ex-husband used to own. A few days after that I had lunch in a cute burger restaurant called Johnny Rockets or something like that. Anyway, the wait staff wore uniforms like those you see in old Coca-Cola ads. There are small juke boxes at every table and you can hear an oldie for just a nickel. As I was waiting for my sandwich I saw many "American Bandstand" goodies, including my ex's group--there it was The Monotones "Book of Love". Very weird coincidence don't you think? Did I play it? No. I just smiled and hummed a few notes. ;-)

I think I will watch Three Men and a Little Lady tonight while I enjoy my Slim-Fast :-(  There is a gorgeous old juke box in this movie.

After the Cancer Walk

-- Click for more Information to popup     My walking buddy had the right idea. She said that she was heading home to rest after the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk. I stayed out a little longer because--well, because I was already out.  Anyway, I got home around 2p or so, had a bite to eat and immediately fell asleep. When I awoke it was 8:30 and I thought "wow", this is great I slept through the whole night. Wrong. It was 8:30p.!! Apparently I was so tired that I feel into one of those really deep sleeps that happen once in a while. My back had been hurting for days before the walk so when I sat up after sleeping, I had all sorts of "owies". Today it is almost as good as new.  I am sure that it was the exercise that did it, or maybe it's my blessing for doing the right thing.

It was awesome and touching to see so many men and young males walking for the fight against breast cancer.

Stretch--I am Doing the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk with Morning

concept: business / general -- Click for more Information to popup     I will be at the Newark Museum this morning at 9:15a to walk with my friend and hundreds of  'Making Strides' people in the downtown Newark area. I went to sleep late last night and it was not particularly restful, I even dreamed that my longtime safe haven friend had come to visit me. Not sure if that is good bad, he has been ill a long time, but it did awaken me from a troubled sleep. Fortunately this does not happen often. Walking this morning with will do me a world of good.

As one who loves rain, I must admit that I am thrilled to be sitting here typing in the glare of sun. I think this is a lovely day for a walk. I hope there is a good turn out for such a good cause. Right now, I am watching Eyewitness news and some people in New York have already started walking. Egads!

I know that I have given this American Cancer Society URL before--here it is again.  http://www.cancer.org/docroot/GI/gi_2.asp

What I have Learned

-- Click for more Information to popup      Someone said something that triggered me to think of what I have learned through the years (and this week)

This week I had to re-learn that if you don't treat your back kindly, it won't be kind to you. I have a problem with my back for many years, usually I take care not lift anything heavy. I even travel light. Not sure why decided to change my office space (a corner of my living room)  by moving desks, etc. Maybe it was boredom because of the rain. Although it did not keep me inside, I was in more than usual.

This morning I learned that when the 'instant oatmeal' folks advise you to empty one envelope into a bowl, emptying two is never a good idea. You would not believe how much oatmeal that makes.

I have learned that having power, no matter how much, is not as good as having authority.

I have learned that you don't need a lot of friends, just a few special ones. I have also learned that you need friends of both sexes.

I have learned that some people will begrudge what they believe to be your success however small it is and some people will champion your successes as much or more than you. .

Many years ago I learned that the old adage "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt", is not necessarily true. I also learned that the right words at the right time can change your life.

The Positives of Networking

female soldier with a gun -- Click for more Information to popup  A definate 'thumbs up'. Some people may think of  'networking' as going into a "business card battlefield" but I enjoy it.  A few months back, I met and talked to a lovely young woman named Kismet at a Give 'N Take networking event in Newark, NJ at the beautiful Savoy Grill.  Kismet is a singer, I found out just how good she is this morning . The e-mail below was in my in box  yesterday.  Many thanks to singer Morley Kamen, who was kind enough to pass this on. I have put Morley's information at the bottom of this entry.  ____________________________

Did I  have my television on ch. 4 this morning? You betcha.  Way to go ladies!  Here is Morley Kamen's site, there are lyrics to several of her songs and event notices  http://www.morleymusic.org/press.html Morley was one of the artists who sang at the Lillith Fair.  http://www.lilithfair.com/artists/morley/.

Here is something from the press; "her voice and music are a distinctive hybrid of a range of artists from Roberta Flack to Sade to Annie Lenox to Joni Mitchell, with a sound that is all her own. Sensuality, soul, intellect, and relevance are qualities she shares with these artists, and Morley carries on their legacy of writing and performing music from the heart (and mind) for the heart and mind in a sound that is all her own."

BTW the event was given by the group Give 'N Take you can get more information at http://www.giventakenetwork.org/   The Savoy Grill is beautiful and serves great food (and drinks ;-) It is located in Newark at 60 Park Place.

Mid Week Musings

concept: deep in thought -- Click for more Information to popup     So far, this has a been a month of talking to friends about change. Not sure if this is a coincidence or simply proves my theory about this time of year and our personal "winter of discontent" as the time changes back to gray mornings and early nights.

A friend has started a journal/blog "about how movies can trigger sense memories."  Take a look http://journals.aol.com/woodhead393/MovieSenses/  and share your thoughts. The past weekend I talked to a friend who loves old movies as I do. After hanging up I took out a couple of light movies to watch as I cleaned. The first movie I watched was Sabrina starting Audrey Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart and William Holden. Between the movies and the rain I was in heaven.

I wonder if I am the only person who gets lost in Ikea? I continue to be intimitated when shopping in large stores or going to movie houses with 20 or more theaters. I went to the Woodbridge Mall by myself one time only, decided it was not a comfortable fit and never returned. But there is something about Ikea in Elizabeth that pulls me back to get lost again. Those arrows on the floor do not help. I should know that any store that has three and four free shuttle buses to bring people in from New York to shop is large and going to be crowded. Still every couple of years I feel the pull. Even the food line is scary, if there had been a hot dog stand nearby I would have had one for lunch and that's something I never do. So did I buy anything? Yes. I bought a new saute pan and a jar of ligonberries. It's not called jam or anything, but it is delicious.  It is always such a treat for me. At Ikea, it is the condiment of choice. It is served like cranberry sauce but I like it spread on bread ;-)  One of the reasons I like it is because it only has three ingredients; ligonberries, sugar and fruit pectin just like homemade jams and jellies. In the old days that's how Hero jams were :-(

I just noticed that my blurb concerning ageism on the morning news received a "It's true, it's true." response. Take a look http://journals.aol.com/vryanes/vw/entries/665 I am sure that one of the reasons so many of the news folk (men and women) often seem to appear younger after a week or two of vacation. It's a Botox holiday and sometimes more. Last week on TV there was talk about a female news person looking much younger these days. I must admit that I had noticed it too.

Angels On Our Shoulders?

concept: business man angel advice -- Click for more Information to popup    As I type this I am looking at two angels, one I have had for years, one I just received from a work friend after her cherished auntie died. I feel so honored that she would take time to send this precious sentiment to me. I know that it won't come as a surprise to most of my friends that I do believe that there angels, spirits or forces that watch over us. Sometimes they come in the form of real people ;-)  My senior client from the Friend Advocate Program who has become very dear to me was surely put in my path by my mom to show me continued mommy love and of course keep me on the right track. This week I changed my plans because I received back-to-back calls from my senior. The first simply said "Van--call me when you have a chance." So I figured I would call her after I had rested a bit before going to dinner. The next call and the next were less than ten minutes apart and I learned her real reason for calling. While she had remembered that I would be away, she forgot when I said that I would see her, her message was that she thought that I was sick, hurt or 'something' and no one would know to tell her, I should just her know that I was alright. Needless to say I called and assured her that I was fine and would see her shortly and that we would do her bills and talk. When I arrived she hugged me and kissed me, then immediately told me that I had gained weight and said to turn around so she could she my behind. :-(   Wow! Shades of mommy. Although, it is true, I have gained weight.

Today is my friends birthday. I will buy her a card and a quart of Hagen Daas(sp?) ice cream for her freezer???    Her niece stopped by yesterday and brought a lovely birthday. Cake and HD ice cream is a favorite of hers.

Happy 95th my dear friend   Birthday cake

Is Ageism Showing in Morning News Shows

television set -- Click for more Information to popup  Good Morning America is my favorite morning news show, but I do watch other shows as well. I just noticed last week that Jim Ryan, former anchorman for Channel 5's morning news is now a part of the Ch. 2 news team. I do remember when Ch. 5 had what I thought was a retirement party for him. I never really liked Ryan but I did like how well Lynn worked with Ryan and the others when they seemed to forget that they were there to present the news not their opinions. I was disappointed to find that she (Lynn) is now on the early evening news. So what do I care? The thing is now that I see Jim Ryan on another channel, I am wondering if he and Lynn were moved because Ch. 5 wanted younger and prettier faces for their A.M. show?  Jim Ryan is still not one of my favorite news folk, but I am hopeful that he left Ch. 5 because he wanted to, not because someone had a problem with his age.

Dirty Dancing and Vacations in the Peekskills

Autumn leaves -- Click for more Information to popup     When I was in AC I saw the movie Dirty Dancing with Jennifer Grey, Patrick Swayze and Jerry Orbach. It was about the trial, tribulations and fun of  vacationing in the Poconos. Orbach was Grey's monied doctor dad and Swayze was Johnny Castle, the poor kid working and dancing dirty in the Poconos. This movie brought back such memories. This was my friend Joannie's favorite movie. But why wouldn't it be, every weekend she used to go to Roseland in New York to dance. I loved Joannie, she taught me to appreciate country music and line dancing before I ever saw the electric slide. The vacation spot in the movie was like a half-dozen real resorts in the Poconos, PA. I don't recall ever going to one there, but my husband and I did go to a resort in the Peekskills, NY. Gosh, we were so young , so poor, so undisciplined, (is that a word?, is it spelled correctly?) I am sure that we used to spend one fourth of our meager vacation pay before we got home. Then we would try to find fun vacation things to do. One year I saw a small ad in Ebony Magazine, it was about one inch but it caught my eye because it said "Come Vacation at King's Lodge, Peekskill, NY" I did not know what Peekskill was but the price was right for us if we were real careful. I talked to Warren (husband) and he thought it was a good idea. It turned out to be one of the smartest things we ever did. We went there yearly for vacation for many years. I have probably talked about this before, but that does happen when you are writing your thoughts. I think I will check out the vacation section in the Star Ledger for Fall vacations in the Poconos and Peekskills and see what's there. My guess is there are probably a lot of singles stuff in those places now because it is self-contained fun. Eat at family style tables,  fun, hokey entertainment and a dance band. In the old days only couples or families went, I don't think I ever saw anyone without a mate. I do have a friend to travel with, but I suspect that I will have a hard time persuading him to stay in one of these places. But this is just the time to see the changing leaves and, there are several winerys that have tours and wine tasting. Mmmm--this could work.

Autum in Atlantic City

-- Click for more Information to popup     I returned from AC mid afternoon Friday. I came in early because I had planned to attend a dress rehearsal at NJPAC--I love doing that. However, after seeing the tents, etc. that were being put up on the PAC grounds, I changed my mind because it looked like there would be a lot more going on than I was ready for.

As always, I enjoyed the water. I talked to one man to who me that he had been fishing since 9a that morning, it was getting dark when I we spoke. He showed me his catch and remarked that it was be enough for two meals.  He was from Philly and said that AC is one of his favorite fishing spots and that he had been going there long before the casinos were in place. This man talked about the water, the feeling he got from fishing, etc. I was tempted to ask his birthday to find out if he was a water sign. The two beautiful houses I watched being built are now inhabited. One has a large American flag flying and a really big BBQ thingie on the top porch.

When I arrived Monday the weather was lovely but windy. There were still some people in bathing suits on the beach though. A lot of boats were out, more sail boats than I have seen in a while. Watching activity on the water is such a joy for me. I keep promising myself that I will buy a good pair of binoculars but they are so costly. I can't take my dad's because they weigh ton and I he told that they are from the war. I looked at Korean Memorial space again. This time a took a picture of it, but I think the camera I used was not working properly.

AC just gets better and better for non-gambling folk like me. I enjoy the calmness of sitting on the boardwalk and reading or strolling down to Gardner's Basin for seafood. This time I also saw a play.  Cole Porter's musical Anything Goes is at Trump Plaza so I went to a matinee. The show was excellent and I had good seat.  I love this kind of theater--it made my trip this time. I was feeling a little let down because I just missed the Cape May tour. Now if I could find a hotel with big name singers in nice sized room instead of the really biiiigggg rooms (many with long family style tables) Shudder!

New Orleans Then and Now

-- Click for more Information to popup   With so much going on in in New Orleans I thought that I would share my thoughts concerning  the 1997 movie Eve's Bayou in Going to the Movies with Vannie. The action in this movie takes place in Louisianna at a time when we gave no thought to hurricanes or the destruction of a State. I watched it and again and can't believe how good this movie is. Some of the scenery is just breathtaking, especially near the water.  http://www.gardenandhearth.com/Movie-Reviews/_Eves-Bayou.htm

A friend sent this link to me just yesterday. It is hard to believe that this devastation and sadness is the same state. http://gmagic.com/katrina/

Whatta Week. Whine!!

person turning pages on the calendar -- Click for more Information to popup This has been an week of small inconveniences, mishaps and annoyances. The last being my breakfast this morning. I ate the remains of a 'Subway' sandwich I bought at the mall last night. I don't why I keep forgetting that I really do hate the bread they use, much too soft and doughy--I like bread that fights back when you chew it.  Now that I think of it, all of my annoyances concern food. Last week I went to buy disks for my PC but stopped by Applebees for lunch. Ordered a shrimp dish, did not realize that I had to remove the tail shells myself, Eeewww! I never order shrimp with tails on. Dessert. They had no plain pound cake (my favorite sweet thing in the world) so I ordered the cheese cake because it did not look so bad, it had caramel drizzled over it, I could scrape that off. It turns out that again I did not read the menu correctly. There was a 1/4 inch layer of really sticky caramel layered on top of the very sweet cheese cake which was served with two large very sweet tortillas. When I am gonna learn to read the full description on the menu?

I went to the theater in NY yesterday, I saw The Naked Girl on the Appian Way. An OK play starring Jill Clayburgh and Richard Thomas. Both looked wonderful!  I left my reading glasses at home and was unable to read the program :-(  so I had no real sense of the 'why' of the action, except what I saw. Usually this is fine. However when I saw the siblings in a passionate embrace I was very much turned off and upset. It turns out that a free thinking childless couple adopted three children, (Caucasian, Asian, Latina) so the embracers were not bound by blood. I still found it off-putting because they were raised as brother and sister. The son who is not in love with his sister, is bi-sexual. It is later revealed that the mother had an earlier lesbian relationship with her neighbor. I guess this is no longer shocking (the sexual preference things) and did not bother me; but I think incest, even when only implied, holds no humor) the rest ofthe audience were laughing and seemed to enjoy the play, but my thoughts were that it was too much for one show. Shudder. You have to understand that I only just recently stopped boycotting Woody Allen for hooking up with Soo ???.  It finally hit me that it was Mia Farrow, not Woody, who adopted her children. I guess he never thought of her children as his own. I still think it's tacky though :-(

Yesterday, before going to the theater I stopped for a bite to eat. Some guy comes over, and puts a napkin and silverware on the table, I start to tell him what I want and he says 'the girl' will help you. Annoyed that he called her the girl. Then 'the girl', comes over and says, "would you like to order?", I say "Yes". She reply's "Just a minute, I will get my pad." She walked into the kitchen and stayed  5 minutes. I wonder why she did not just keep the pad in her pocket?  That seems like common sense to me.

Yes.  I know that I sound cranky.  I guess it's the little 'foody' things that get to me.  I have decided I will not accept anything less than perfect for the remainder of this week.  So, I will keep smiling and cook my own food ;-)  Will have noodles, broccoli and the last piece of lemon pound cake. Plain. Simple. Good!

WOW! MyPoints.com Donates to American Red Cross

-- Click for more Information to popup     Received the e-mail below from MyPoints.com concerning personal points donations to the American Red Cross. Donors were addressed personally. A nice touch. I must say that it was a very painless way to donate money that way. These points grow so quickly because you are just reading ads, it feels like a scam but it isn't. I use my points to receive Macy's gifts cards for myself. Have even given one away as a present ;-)

All of us at MyPoints and the American Red Cross would like to thank you for the generous Point donations you have made in the past few weeks. Members like you immediately responded to our request for Point donations, and we are overwhelmed to see the extent of our members' generosity.

Thanks to you, MyPoints has just sent the American Red Cross a check for $333,844 to be donated to the Disaster Relief Fund. Your Points are making a difference! Something to Make You Smile and Think BEFORE You Buy That Outfit

Cartoon bride of Frankenstein     It's 7am.  I am reading my e-mails and smiling. The article below is from Womens Wall Street. Great site--good practical financial advice with a touch of woman humor ;-)  Sharing the URL at bottom.

WWS Top Ten List

Were You Insane When You Bought That?

Here are 10 reasons that you should be able to use to return your purchases:

1. I thought it’d make me look like Catherine Zeta-Jones. It didn’t.

2. On second thought, I decided I could use the money more wisely, such as on groceries.

3. I had just listened to a John Denver song on the oldies station, which put in an outdoorsy, "Rocky Mountain High" mood. Now I realize that I don’t need Gore-tex hiking boots for my city sidewalks.

4. I was in a hurry because the store was closing in three minutes and I felt an urgency to buy something.

5. I bought it to reward myself for sticking to my diet. Today, I ordered a boatful of extra-cheesy, greasy Tater Tots. I can’t keep this reward.

6. It went out of style 15 minutes after I bought it.

7. It’s not me. Not at this moment anyway.

8. The clerk insisted that these Spandex shorts were flattering. My best friend, who doesn’t survive on commission, looked at my caboose and said it resembled two cats trying to fight their way out of a paper bag.

9. Something must be wrong with the store lighting in the dressing room because this blouse wasn’t the color of a bruised mushroom when I bought it.

10. I was feeling uncharacteristically sophisticated when I bought this cashmere suit. Alas, today I feel like Ma Kettle.

Here Comes The Judge!

-- Click for more Information to popup     Friday, September 9, a friend and former coworker took oath as a Superior Court Judge of New Jersey. How wonderful is that?  The Court House is being renovated so I had to ask how to get into the building. The woman who directed me, reminded me that I should not have 'a little knife' (her words) or anything with me because it would be confiscated. Sounds like it may have happened to her. Happy I long ago got rid of the little knife I used to have on my keychain before 9-11. There were so many people attending the swearing in that some of us (me) had to sit in an overflow room. I have to tell you when she put that robe on, I felt chills and goosebumps.  I am so proud of her and to know her. I had to chance to see many of my friends and former coworkers later at the reception which was just beautiful. What can I say, the lady has style.

When I left the university one of the things I missed most was interacting with my two book pal's, she was one of them.  She is the person who gave me those wonderful audio books to listen to. She is my J.D. Robb buddy, she took to J. D. Robb (Nora Roberts) like a fish to water :-)  Hopefully, she has already read the last "In Death" novel. Free time may now be at a premium.

Congratulations Judge Teare.

Networking and New Friends

I went to a Give 'N Take networking meeting last week (my second meeting) and was delighted to finally meet the founder, Simone Kelly. Simone is so upbeat you get a positive buzz just from talking to her. She has written a book titled "Jack of All Trades, Master of None?" I bought the book because I figured I must have met her in another life. After all, how can she know me when she had never met me?  Her title is proof that she must know me (smiling).  I have been like a someone turned loose after being confined for a long time. I am doing so many things my head spins--I am trying to get a firm handle on that. I am hopeful that Jack of All Trades, Master of None? will help me to take giant steps in moving forward. Yes, I do know that I will have to follow her advice to get results :-)  I have already begun.

Here is the link to the Give 'N Take site http://www.giventakenetwork.org/  This group is growing in leaps and bounds. I am happy that I found it in it's infancy. I believe it is just 2 years old. It is a pleasure attend these functions. I come away with solid information and positive feelings.

Remembering 9-11-2001

-- Click for more Information to popup     9-11-01 changed our lives. We Americans finally understood that we too are vulnerable. We have made changes I thought that I would never see. I can remember the event that made me 'get it'; to know that life in the U.S.A would be different from now on. I stopped to pick up a pastry from a shop at 744 Broad Street, Newark and I had to sign my name to walk through to the shop. It really spooked me. Now I go through the inconvenient side entrance. These days I make sure that I remove my cheap kiddy scissors from my purse when I am going to the theater. When you receive your tickets in the mail, you are advised that purses may be searched. And you are advised not to have a back pack, it will be searched.  re: scissors, I use my scissors to open packages, etc when I pick up my biz mail. As a non-driver I like to get rid of any excess weight so I toss the packaging and just keep the contents. Twice I have forgotten to remove the scissors so just threw them  in the trash and kept moving. Have you noticed that most trash bins are now  lined with see through garbage bags?  Easier to spot a filled sack, brief case or bomb. Very scary.

I often share this interactive Statue of Liberty on July 4, however, this may be a better time for sharing.  http://www.njagyouth.org/liberty.htm  use your mouse to click over Lady Liberty's head.

Reading Books About the South Written by southern women

stapler remover, note book -- Click for more Information to popup    I continue this quest of reading books about the South, written by southern women. Not quite sure when this started or where I am going with it, it seems more of a destination than a journey, but I will stay the course.  I received  The Secret Life of Bees a few days ago and just opening it now.  I am sure that a friend, someone whose taste I obviously trust,  told me about this book because I ordered it without knowing anything about it.   I just went to Amazon.com to get some information and read this: From Publishers Weekly  "Honey-sweet but never cloying, this debut by nonfiction author Kidd (The Dance of the Dissident Daughter) features a hive's worth of appealing female characters, an offbeat plot and a lovely style. It's 1964, the year of the Civil Rights Act, in Sylvan, S.C. Fourteen-year-old Lily is on the lam with motherly servant Rosaleen, fleeing both Lily's abusive father T. Ray and the police who battered Rosaleen for defending her new right to vote. Lily is also fleeing memories, particularly her jumbled recollection of how, as a frightened four-year-old, she accidentally shot and killed her mother during a fight with T. Ray. Among her mother's possessions, Lily finds a picture of a black Virgin Mary with "Tiburon, S.C." on the back so, blindly, she and Rosaleen head there. It turns out that the town is headquarters of Black Madonna Honey, produced by three middle-aged black sisters, August, June and May Boatwright. The "Calendar sisters" take in the fugitives, putting Lily towork in the honey house, where for the first time in years she's happy. But August, clearly the queen bee of the Boatwrights, keeps asking Lily searching questions. Facedwith so ideally maternal a figure as August, most girls would babble uncontrollably. But Lily is a budding writer, desperate to connect yet fiercely protective of her secret interior life. Kidd's success at capturing the moody adolescent girl's voice...".

Wow!! This sounds like a winner to me. I am going try and wait to read this when I go away at the end of the month. I have tried saving books to read at a later date before,  I always end up reading the novel in the next day or so :-(
